SUMMARY:Using Public-Domain Visual Art for Book Design and Descriptive Inspiration

Focusing on visual material from Elizabethan\nEngland and Greek mythology\, the session explores how engravings\, woodcuts\, paintings\, and ancient art can shape\natmosphere\, character\, and setting—while also anchoring books in historically resonant imagery. \nAttendees will learn: \n\n\n\nHow to identify and verify truly public-domain visual art\nWhere to find high-quality images suitable for covers\, interiors\, and reader magnets\nHow to adapt historical images for strong genre signaling and market appeal\nTechniques for using images to spark sensory detail\, mood\, and scene construction\nBest practices for attribution and ethical reuse\n\n\n\nUsing real examples\, this talk bridges creative craft and practical publishing\, showing how centuries-old images\ncan fuel vivid prose and professional book design—without copyright anxiety.\nIdeal for novelists\, historical and mythic writers\, indie authors\, and small publishers looking to write better\, design\nsmarter\, and publish with confidence. \n Download Flyer

SUMMARY:Connections: Concord and the WWII Bombing of Japan
DESCRIPTION:The city of Concord holds remarkable—and often overlooked—connections to the bombing of Japan during World War II. Most\, if not all\, of the munitions ultimately dropped on Japanese cities were stored and handled at what is now the Concord Naval Weapons Station. The destructiveness of the bombs were felt locally in 1943\, when the Port Chicago explosion shook Concord and surrounding communities with devastating force.\nIn the years before and after the war\, Concord was also home to survivors of the bombings in Japan. Health permitting\, one or more of these residents\, some nowcentenarian\, may be available to share their firsthand experiences\, offering an extraordinary living link to this history. \n  \nConcord Historical Society \npresents \nSpeakers Series with Don Seta \nJune 14\, 2026 – 2:00PM \nConcord Museum and Event Center \n1928 Clayton Road \nFREE \nParking behind the building on Marina Ct. \n  \n Download Flyer
