SUMMARY:Using Public-Domain Visual Art for Book Design and Descriptive Inspiration
DESCRIPTION:Speakers Series with: Dore’ Ripley\nEvent Schedule: MARCH 22\, 2026 2:00 FREE (donations graciously accepted)\nVenue: 1928 Clayton Read – parking behind the building on Marina Ct. \nTHINKING OF WRITING A BOOK? \nPublic-domain images aren’t just for covers—they’re powerful storytelling tools. \nThis presentation hopes to show writers how to use public-domain visual art both for book covers and interior\nimages\, and as rich descriptive inspiration while writing fiction. Focusing on visual material from Elizabethan\nEngland and Greek mythology\, the session explores how engravings\, woodcuts\, paintings\, and ancient art can shape\natmosphere\, character\, and setting—while also anchoring books in historically resonant imagery. \nAttendees will learn: \n\n\n\nHow to identify and verify truly public-domain visual art\nWhere to find high-quality images suitable for covers\, interiors\, and reader magnets\nHow to adapt historical images for strong genre signaling and market appeal\nTechniques for using images to spark sensory detail\, mood\, and scene construction\nBest practices for attribution and ethical reuse\n\n\n\nUsing real examples\, this talk bridges creative craft and practical publishing\, showing how centuries-old images\ncan fuel vivid prose and professional book design—without copyright anxiety.\nIdeal for novelists\, historical and mythic writers\, indie authors\, and small publishers looking to write better\, design\nsmarter\, and publish with confidence. \n Download Flyer

SUMMARY:Speaker’s Series - Free Lindsay Marie Morris
DESCRIPTION:Sixteen-year-old Annalisa Aiello huddles around the radio with her family when a special announcement shatters her world: Pearl Harbor has been bombed – where her brother is stationed on the USS Arizona. After the United States declares war\, Annalisa watches in horror as her father\, a Sicilian fisherman\, is arrested as an “enemy alien”. Grappling with grief and harsh wartime restrictions\, Annalisa is forced to undertake an unexpected journey across the country to find her father and uncover the sacrifices of the past. \nMeanwhile\, in war-torn Sicily\, her cousin Alberto navigates bombing raids as ancient fishing traditions crumble around him. But the forces tearing this family apart began decades earlier with a desperate choice made on a Sicilian shore – a secret pact sealed beneath the stars that promised a brighter future across the sea. \nAs Annalisa searches for her father and Alberto seeks his place in a changing world\, they both discover that even in the darkest times\, hope for a better future can endure.\nFrom an American internment camp to Sicily’s bombed villages\, Beneath the Sicilian Stars follows one family’s fight for survival\, identity\, and hope during World War II. Perfect for readers of Kelly Rimmer\, Rhys Bowen and Angela Petch.

SUMMARY:Speakers Series: The early prohibition years in Concord - Italian winemakers\, saloonkeepers\, and pharmacists.
DESCRIPTION:Leslie Crenna\, daughter of Lloyd Crenna\, will tell the story of the Crenna\, Vasconi\, and Arrighi families\, and others across Concord and Contra Costa County\, during the early Prohibition years\, drawing on primary research documents and the families’ extensive photo collection. When the “13-year experiment” to kill “John Barleycorn” began in January 2020\, after a short War Time Prohibition\, many Italian winemakers and saloonkeepers in Concord were unprepared for the radical change. Enforcement visits and letters\, raids\, and arrests by the “prohis” transformed family businesses and legacies. Loopholes were found\, and most pivoted to new professions or businesses. Family members and experts in Prohibition history are encouraged to share their stories to deepen our collective knowledge. \nLeslie Crenna:\nLeslie Crenna is an amateur historian focusing on her Italian ancestors and a multitude of cousins she’s discovered through her research. She has organized several family reunions\, reuniting and introducing second and third cousins for the first time\, and re-connecting with relations in Italy. Leslie serves as both Communications Manager and Engagement Campaign Manager for Cool Davis\, a sustainability non-profit in Yolo County\, California. She majored in Linguistics at UCSC and holds a teaching credential from San Francisco State University. Leslie is experienced in a wide range of “living lightly” strategies spanning the domains of energy\, transportation and consumption\, including greywater systems.
